What is GDPR cookie consent?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires websites to obtain consent from users before they set cookies on users’ devices (desktop, mobile, tablets etc). This provision is usually referred to as GDPR cookie consent. To comply with this requirement, websites should display a GDPR compliant cookie banner or popup when a user visits the site and obtain their valid consent.

Definition of consent

To be GDPR compliant, the consent obtained has to abide by the definition of consent as stated in the law. Consent has to be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the user’s wishes given through a clear affirmative action. The GDPR also places two additional conditions for consent to be considered valid. A user should be able to withdraw consent at any time and the website owner or publisher should be able to provide proof of consent.
