Do all cookies require consent?

Not all cookies require consent. Strictly necessary cookies or essential cookies are exempt from cookie consent.  These involve cookies that are essential for the website to function, for example, cookies that enable you to log into a website, use a shopping cart or make use of e-billing.

This exemption is laid down in the ePrivacy Directive (EU cookie law) that predates the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As per the Directive, cookies that carry out the transmission of a communication or that are necessary to provide an information society service explicitly required by the user, do not require consent for their use.
