When to appoint DPO vs EU representative?

Data Protection Officer (DPO): Required when an organization’s core activities involve large-scale monitoring or processing of sensitive personal data.

EU Representative: Needed when a non-EU organization processes EU residents’ data regularly.

Some organizations may need both roles.

  • DPO = internal oversight for data protection compliance.
  • EU representative = external point of contact for EU regulators and individuals.
