What is Do Not Track? (DNT)

Do Not Track is a browser setting that sends a ‘Do not track’ request to websites when a user visits the website. It is a way the browser communicates to a website that the user has opted out of tracking. When a user enables this feature, the browser sends a signal to websites that the user visits to not store cookies on their device. Do Not Track is a request and not a legal requirement. Hence it is not necessary that websites adhere to it i.e. DNT on its own is not effective enough to stop websites from tracking users.

Browsers like Firefox and Chrome provide DNT settings. Here’s how to enable it on your browser:

  • Firefox > Preferences > Privacy & Security. Then under Send websites a “Do Not Track” signal that you don’t want to be tracked, enable Always.
  • Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data. Then enable Send a “Do not track” request with your browsing traffic
